Understanding IITT — our triage system at Goroka Provincial Hospital Emergency Department.
URGENCY COMES FIRST
The sickest patients need care first.
Triage is the first assessment of how urgently a patient needs care. Patients are prioritised by urgency, rather than simply by their arrival time.
IITT stands for Interagency Integrated Triage Tool. It was developed by WHO, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières.
Three colours. Different levels of urgency.
RED
Immediate care
High urgency. Needs to be seen immediately.
YELLOW
Care soon
Moderate urgency. Needs to be seen soon.
GREEN
Can wait
Lower urgency. Can wait while more urgent patients receive care.
